Halfrican mix together fuzz, reverb, garage punk and 60s pop hooks to create their own style of intense rock and roll.
Beginning in Glasgow as a lo-fi recording project by vocalist and guitarist Sancho Büna, the band was formed with the addition of bassist Choi Paul and American vocalist and drummer Jet Jackson Marlette. They are renowned for their fast, loud and reverb-drenched live shows.
Both of the band’s 2013 releases; “Hot! Hot! Hot!” EP (El Rancho Records) and “Halfrican Vs White Pages” split cassette (Number4Door/Can’t Stand Ya) rapidly sold out and received wide acclaim from UK and European press. In 2013 Halfrican played over 50 shows in UK and Spain with acts such as Ty Segal, King Tuff, No Age, Male Bonding, Wau y Los Arrrghs!, Jacuzzi Boys and Kid Congo, their hard work soon drew attention from national media and they were included in the BBC’s 20 new Scottish artists of 2014. The band celebrated their achievements by adopting two lions at Edinburgh zoo.
In 2014 Halfrican played around the UK and Europe with Night Beats, Black Lips, Man or Astroman?, Acid Baby Jesus, Bob Logg III, Wampire and Ramones legend Richie Ramone. They have supported their peers at numerous record release shows, launch parties and charity events and played the Scottish music industry showcase ‘Go North’. Halfrican also made an roaring impact on the summer festivals, playing both The Wickerman and Kelburn Castle Festival in Scotland and the Nuit Sonores festival in Lyon, France. In July they played live by the River Clyde at a spectacular event in conjunction with Glasgow’s Commonwealth Games 2014, hosted by Scotland’s 85A. NYC’s CMJ Music Marathon invited Halfrican to play their showcase in October this year, however the band had to kindly decline the offer due to unforeseen circumstances. Halfrican were selected by Dr Martens for a UK press campaign called “What We Stand For” which featured an interview with the band and a photos which were seen nationwide in magazines and billboards.
Halfrican will bring another busy year to a feverish end while simultaneously kicking 2015 into action as they headline a stellar local bill at Glasgow’s 13th Note. The Blog Sound 2015 have already longlisted them as the UK bloggers choice band for the new year. A new single is in production and planned for release on El Rancho Records early 2015.
